MLS Power Rankings: Toronto move back into top two
By Matt Coles
MLS Power Rankings: 3. Philadelphia Union (-1)
The Union drops down a spot on our MLS Power Rankings this week after a tough loss against another side in and amongst the title race. They also dropped down a couple of spots in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
Philadelphia did battle with 2017 MLS Cup winners Toronto FC on Saturday evening and took the early lead through Sergio Santos, who scored after just five minutes. However, they conceded twice in the second half to fall to a 2-1 defeat.
Following the loss, Philadelphia will be looking to bounce back, and they face FC Cincinnati in midweek. They will then take on the Impact at the weekend and will be aiming to improve on their current 4th spot in the East.
This Week’s Fixtures: vs. FC Cincinnati (Wed 7, 7:30 pm ET), vs. Montreal Impact (Sun 11, 7:30 pm ET)
MLS Power Rankings: 2. Toronto FC (+1)

After defeating the league-leading Columbus Crew last weekend, the 2017 MLS Cup champions showed their credentials for another title again. This time by defeating the side that came into the weekend in the 2nd spot in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
Toronto faced off against Philadelphia Union, and had the worst possible start, with Sergio Santos opening the scoring inside the opening five minutes. The Canadian side fought back in the second half though, with Ayo Akinola and Alejandro Pozuelo scoring to give them the victory.
The only ever treble-winners in the league will go on the road twice this week, having now tied the Crew at the top of the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings. TFC will do battle with the Revs and FC Cincinnati with the hope of gaining six points.
This Week’s Fixtures: @ New England Revolution (Wed 7, 7:30 pm ET), @ FC Cincinnati (Sun 11, 7:30 pm ET)
MLS Power Rankings: 1. Columbus Crew SC (=)
Maintaining top spot on our Power Rankings, and the Supporters’ Shield standings, for another week, are the Columbus Crew. But they are now without a win in their last two games, following a score draw with FC Dallas on Saturday night.
The Crew fell behind twice in Frisco at the weekend but were able to fight back twice. Goals from Youness Mokhtar and Pedro Santos helped them fight back from a deficit following strikes from Michael Barrios and Reto Ziegler for the Texan side.
The Crew faces two tricky tests over the next seven days, including a team inside the top five in the Supporters’ Shield standings. They play Montreal Impact at home on Wednesday, before a trip to Orlando to face the Lions at the weekend.
This Week’s Fixtures: vs. Montreal Impact (Wed 7, 7:30 pm ET), @ Orlando City SC (Sun 11, 7:30 pm ET)
