The 2019 Major League Soccer season kicks off this weekend. Here are three must-watch games from the Week 1 slate, including the debut of a newcomer to MLS.

Major League Soccer is back. After a long and busy offseason stocked full of blockbuster trades, record signings and sales, and a wholesale coaching and roster overhauls, finally, the game returns to the pitch and we get to see what these teams look like not just on paper.

Week 1 begins this weekend with a series of fascinating match-ups. There is the debut of a newcomer, the defending champions against a burgeoning rival, and a slew of newly renovated teams simply eager to see what they have in competitive football.

Here are the three must-watch games of Week 1 in MLS.

3. LAFC Vs Sporting KC

There might not have been a more exciting team to watch in 2018 than Los Angeles FC. The newly expanded team arrived on the scene with flashy new attackers, a brilliant stadium that revolutionised the way football is attended in America, and took the league by storm, making the playoffs and almost finishing atop the Western Conference.

To open their 2019 season, they host the team that did actually finish atop the Western Conference. Sporting Kansas City will arrive at the Banc of California Stadium off the back of a CONCACAF Champions League tie against Toluca, one that they currently 3-0 after the first leg.  While travel may be an issue, Peter Vermes has the squad to rotate and still field a very strong starting XI.

These should be two of the best teams in MLS this season, both looking to push the very elite for an MLS Cup appearance come the end of the year. Seeing them against each other this early will be fascinating — also, keep a close eye on the fitness of LAFC MVP Carlos Vela.
