The U.S. Men’s National Team face England on Thursday night. Here are three things to watch for ahead of another testing friendly for the USMNT.
It will be the first time the two teams have faced one another since the 1-1 draw in the World Cup final.
Here are three things to watch for.
3. Wayne Rooney’s England goodbye
It is a contentious topic, but Thursday night’s match will be a little like a retirement celebration for Wayne Rooney. Rooney had already retired from international duty, but the English FA wanted to reward the striker and country’s top goalscorer with one final hurrah.
Given Rooney’s present prominence in the States after his half-season heroics with D.C. United, it makes sense that, should he be given such an honour, it comes against the USMNT. Although both teams will want to win the match, even though it is just a friendly, with many individual players wanting to impress on the international stage, Rooney’s goodbye will change the atmosphere a little.
It will be a weird match for Rooney, who is not there to compete, per se, although I am sure he will want to win. It will also be a weird match for many of the USMNT players, who have played against Rooney in MLS.
