Mustapha Jarju – Vancouver Whitecaps

Mustapha Jarju signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the summer of 2011 after playing 3 season with Belgian club RAEC Mons, who he scored 34 goals for in 99 appearances. MLS advertised Jarju as the first ever African designated player (even though Seattle Sounders‘ Nkufo was from the Congo).

During his time with Vancouver, Jarju played 10 games, starting only 5 of them, and didn’t register a goal or an assist. Impressively, Jarju also was called offside more times than he put a shot on target (4 vs 3). Jarju didn’t last long with the Whitecaps and found himself back at RAEC Mons at the end of Vancouver’s 2011 season.
