Matt Besler

Position: Defender

Club: Sporting Kansas City

Previous All-Star game appearances: 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015

Matt Besler’s inclusion in the All-Star XI marks the fifth time he has made it to the team, which is the third most in his club’s history. The Sporting Kansas defender has been an integral part of both the USMNT and his club Sporting Kansas City, who he joined as part of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

The central defender missed a few games for his club in June while away on international duty with his country at the Copa America Centenario, where he started two games as the USA eventually finished in fourth place. On his return to the MLS, he scored just the third goal of his club career in a 3-2 home victory over Columbus Crew.

It’s no surprise that the 29-year-old has been included in the team once again, based on his playing history. He will have to bring all his experience to the fore if he wants to win the third MLS All-Star game of his career.
