The first California Clasico of the year is between two of the hottest teams in MLS currently.

The California Clasico is one of the first great rivalries in MLS. While the Cascadia clashes, or some games in the Eastern Conference may get more publicity, when San Jose plays the Galaxy there are almost always fireworks. Just ask David Beckham who got in the middle of the rivalry and played a part in the best moment in MLS history.

If you still aren’t convinced, just watch the video of the coming together of players, some pushing and shoving. Then for some reason, San Jose’s mascot rushing in to inform everyone that Sportscenter is next.

This year’s first edition should have some fire works. The two teams are on a run of good form and climbing the western conference standings. The Galaxy are undefeated in their last four matches, San Jose have picked up 10 points in their last five.

Current Record: 5-4-4, 19 pts (4th in the Western Conference)

Last Time Out: 1-0 Win at FC Dallas

Player To Watch: Nick Lima. The rookie has been one of the best this year in all of MLS. His emergence has been a welcome surprise for San Jose but he will be tested against some major firepower against Los Angeles.

Why They Win: They keep things compact and don’t let the tempo of the game get too frantic. If they can make the game physical without things getting out of control, the Earthquakes will be in good shape.

Why They Won’t: The talent gap is just too big and the attacking stars of the Galaxy’s front line show off their talent. The past few matches show if things get high scoring it favors Los Angeles.

Predicted Starting XI:

Current Record: 4-5-2, 14 points (7th in the Western Conference)

Last Time Out: 2-1 win at Minnesota United

Player To Watch: Giovani dos Santos. He’s gotten his groove back, scoring in each of his last three matches. It’s no coincidence that the Galaxy’s improved results have coincided with his upswing in form.

Why They Win: They speed the game up, create more chances, and let their talented stars go to work. The higher scoring the match, the better chances for the Galaxy.

Why They Won’t: Defensive and distribution woes show up again. Something weird happens with the backline, and the gaps left by injuries are too much to overcome.
