Breaking down week four of the MLS Fantasy season. While most teams were off for the weekend, a few new players had breakout performances.

It was the first FIFA weekend of the MLS season, so most teams got the weekend off. There were still three games to be played, meaning a full week in MLS Fantasy.

Team of the Week:

The strategy of loading up on players going up against Minnesota paid off again. New England landed four on the team of the week after they got five goals from four different players. A scoreless draw between New York and Real Salt Lake also meant there were plenty of points to be had from their defenders.

For the first time all year, Diego Valeri doesn’t find himself on the list. He was due to cool off eventually, and did so in Portland’s first loss of the year.

The Good and Bad of Week 4:

Good: Goal Scoring Defenders

With only three games going on and one of them ending in a scoreless draw, goal scorers were hard to find. If you were able to land either Brian Kallman or Chris Tierney you probably had a good week. Although, many understandably stayed away from Kallman due to Minnesota’s defensive struggles.

Bad: Sal Zizzo

Zizzo was a very popular pick with a low price tag and many teams sitting out this weekend. He was selected by over 25 percent of teams but started the game on the bench for the first time this season. He played 30 minutes and only got a single point for his fantasy owners.

Good: New England’s Midfield

Chances are if you tried to take advantage of Minnesota’s defense again you cashed in. Diego Fagundez, Lee Nguyen, and Scott Caldwell combined for 32 points as they shared the wealth while picking apart Minnesota’s back line.

Bad: Cody Cropper

Cropper was a popular pick among keepers this week, but gave up two goals in their win. Minnesota is a popular punching bag, but their offense has still put up production. Banking on them to not score has been a bad decision, they have scored six in four matches.

Good: Both Kamaras

Both Kei and Ola Kamara found the back of the net this weekend. The Columbus striker is continuing his good form while Kei finally broke through for his first of the year.

Bad: Frederick Gulbrandsen

There is always an adjustment period for new players, the new Red Bulls striker is no exception to that. In his first three matches, Gulbrandsen has yet to score or tally an assist.

Three Players to get in Week 5

Keegan Rosenberry

Minnesota’s struggles have really overshadowed the fact that D.C. United hasn’t scored a goal this season. Expect Philadelphia take advantage of that again this weekend. Onyewu might be a tempting add but Rosenberry is a much lower yellow card risk.

Jack Harrison

NYCFC has created chances all season but hasn’t been a lethal finishing team yet. Harrison hasn’t had the best fantasy year but there’s just a gut feeling that he can get on the end of a big chance against San Jose. A team that has had some issues at goalkeeper this season.

Nicolas Lodiero

Lodiero is in the middle of a dangerous Seattle offense and is in the middle of just about everything for them. Throw in a home match against and Atlanta team that plays fast and could give up goals and you have a recipe for some fantasy point stew.
