NYCFC continued their midfield overhaul with the announcement of a new signing from Germany, which should help continue their attacking style.

Patrick Vieira had a successful debut season in the MLS last year as the manager of NYCFC. Moving the team from 10 victories to 15 in 2016, and up to 2nd place in the East from finishing 8th in their expansion season.

Frank Lampard announced his retirement this week, and there are rumors that Mix Diskerud will be traded before the start of the season. On Wednesday the club announced the signing of a new midfielder who should slot right into the starting line-up for Vieira’s ball playing style.

Alex Ring, joins New York City FC from 2. Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern where he made 76 appearances and eight goals since 2013. Ring has been a part of the Finnish national team setup since the U17 squad, earning 42 caps on the senior team.

The MLS club secured him for around $300k from their targeted allocation money pool.

Speaking about his new signing Vieira commented, “At 25, Alexander is a player entering his peak years who has played at a high level over a number of seasons. He’s a midfielder who can contribute on both sides of the game, both defensively and offensively and he gives us another great option either at the base of midfield or box-to-box. Alexander has a good engine and is a competitive player which should suit Major League Soccer.”

For his part Ring sounds like he has been pushing for a move to the MLS and was excited about playing for the club.

Alex stated, “As soon as I heard of the interest I was intrigued because I know how big the club is and how well-supported the team is. It took a long time to get it done but as soon as I knew about the New York option it was clear for me that I wanted to do it. I had to fight for it hard but I’m so happy. I’ve been watching the MLS games they show in Germany on Eurosport and I’ve learned it’s a very physical league and maybe an underestimated one.”
