LA Galaxy vs Orlando City SC: Three Key Moments

The LA Galaxy picked up an impressive three points at home over Orlando City SC in Landon Donovan’s return. Giovani dos Santos’ brace led the way to a 4-2 win.

The LA Galaxy defeated Orlando City SC, 4-2, behind Giovani dos Santos’ brace and two assists. Even though Orlando started strong, LA had control over most of the match. Los Angeles maintained their unbeaten record at home this season and they are 36W-14D-2L in their last 52 games including playoffs.

This game had all kinds of extras. It was a great match but the return of Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane returning, and Kaka starting, this had a classic feel to it. Orlando and Los Angeles didn’t disappoint as they were apart of a classic battle. LA fans went home happy after a win and a Landon Donovan appearance.

With the win, the Galaxy shot up into second place in the Western Conference with 47 total points (11-4-14 record). Orlando City are fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and this loss stagnates them in the final spot above the red line. With 34 total points (7-8-13 record), they are only one point ahead of DC United and New England Revolution.

1. Opening Goal

Orlando City SC got the  scoring started in the 20′ minutes when Kevin Molino scored his 10th goal of the season. He was able to score off of a rebound after Cyle Larin’s shot deflected off of Jelle Van Damme. OCSC looked threatening at the beginning of the match but this would be their only goal.

2. Gio’s Brace

Giovani dos Santos had himself a game as he recorded two goals and two assists on the match. He had a first half brace with his first goal coming in the 35′ minute off of a cross from Emmanuel Boateng. His second goal game just a few minute slater in the 45′ minute when he scored on a penalty kick for his 14th goal of the season. Some controversy ensued as the foul was actually committed outside of the box but nonetheless, Gio converted from the spot. In between those goals, he recorded an assist to Alan Gordon in the 38′ minute. (But he may have been offside)

3. The King Seals Three Points

Robbie Keane made his return to the Galaxy after missing the past four games. He came on during the 60′ minute for Alan Gordon and instantly made an impact. The King scored in the 70′ minute off of some impressive attacking play from Sebastian Lletget and Giovani dos Santos.

Extra: The GOAT Returns

Landon Donovan made his return for to MLS and for the LA Galaxy when he came on during the 83′ minute. He came on for Raul Mendiola and received cheers from everyone in the stadium. He may have only played a few minutes but this is a match that no one will forget. It will be interesting to see how he plays going forward.

The LA Galaxy will be on the road for their next match when they travel to take on Sporting KC on Sunday, September 18th. Orlando City SC will be looking to bounce back in their next game against Columbus Crew. They will head back home for that match on Saturday, September 17th.
