MLS Playoff Picture and League Recap

The hunt for a spot in the MLS playoffs is alive and well, with many teams in the middle of the table vying for a spot. The Seattle Sounders lost their place as the top team in the Western Conference, losing 2-1 to Real Salt Lake today. In the eastern conference, Sporting Kansas City is in a must win contest this evening if the club wants to retain its position at the top.

Currently, the Eastern Conference table looks like this:

Team
Record
Points
Sporting KC11-6-639
DC United11-4-737
Toronto FC9-5-732
NY Red Bulls6-10-728
Philadelphia Union6-9-827
Columbus Crew6-9-827
NE Revolution8-2-1226
Houston Dynamo7-4-1225
Chicago Fire4-13-525
Montreal Impact3-5-1414

As you can see, five teams are all one win away from that elusive fifth seed. If the Red Bulls aren’t careful, the Crew, Revolution, Dynamo are all within striking distance of the fourth seed. As the playoffs draw nearer the games will only get more intense.

Here are the standings in the West:

Points
Real Salt Lake11-9-442
Sounders FC13-2-741
FC Dallas10-6-736
LA Galaxy9-7-434
Whitecaps FC7-11-432
Colorado Rapids8-6-930
Portland Timbers7-9-730
SJ Earthquakes6-6-824
Chivas USA6-5-1123

Both the Rapids and the Timbers are just a win away from taking the Whitecaps’ fifth seed. A win for either in their next outing would give be huge for playoff their chances.

So where does this leave us? It’s almost impossible to predict a winner at this point as several teams have shown they will be tough come playoff time. Seattle has looked strong all year but faltered today against RSL. Hopefully losing DeAndre Yedlin will not negatively effect their performance for the rest of the season.

Bradley Wright-Phillips (pictured above) continues to lead the race for the Golden Boot at 18, with Dom Dwyer and Erick Torres in second at 14. Thierry Henry holds a slim lead for assist leader with 10, while Luis Robles leads the league in saves at 82. With all the playoff tension, we should see a great finish to the MLS season.
