With the 2014 Major League All-Star Game almost here as the best MLS players the league has to offer are set to take on European giants Bayern Munchen in Portland in the annual match between Major League Soccer and a top European club aimed at showcasing the talent the North American league has, fans have named their MLS All-Star Fan XI as the voting results became official on Wednesday.
As expected, the Fan XI is filled with United States’ World Cup stars as eight of the eleven players on the list played for Brazil in the 2014 World Cup along with USMNT legend Landon Donovan who maintained his popularity throughout the league enough without a World Cup roster spot to make the XI.
New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry and Seattle Sounders striker Obafemi Martins were the other two non-Landon Donovan players to make the fan’s Starting XI despite not being USMNT players as the Arsenal legend from the Red Bulls and the Sounders Nigerian forward made up the two forward positions.
Perhaps the most glaring omission on the Fan XI is the lack of Jermain Defoe at the forward position as the accomplished Tottenham striker who has 10 MLS goals on the season was omitted for Martins in the fan vote as it is clear the popularity of the Seattle Sounders and their large supporters base edged out the former Spurs man who has enjoyed an expectedly strong first half of the season in Toronto.
Interestingly enough the Fan XI had only three defenders, which expectedly were Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and DeAndre Yedlin while the midfielder/attacker Clint Dempsey was slotted in the midfielder role to open up a spot for an extra striker in a 3-4-3 formation.
